Veterans Day Ceremonies in Gloucester on Friday, November 11

The Office of Veterans’ Services and the Gloucester United Veterans Council will host the  Veteran’s Day Observances on Friday, November 11 at Gloucester High School at 9 a.m.  followed  by a parade to the Joan D’ Arc Monument at American Legion Square on Washington Street ending with a ceremony to honor World War I veterans.

At Gloucester High School, Master of Ceremonies, Mark L. Nestor, will welcome Guest Speaker, Dr. Jacob M. Romo, a graduate of Peabody High School and the University of Massachusetts. Nestor holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Social Welfare Planning from Brandeis University.

A retired Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Medical Service Corps, Dr. Romo received his commission at the University of Massachusetts and served as:  Social Work Officer, Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas; Division Social Work Officer, Mental Hygiene Consultation Service and Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic, Schofield Barracks, HI;  Faculty, Medical Field Services School, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Chief, Army Community Services, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Director of Retirement Studies, Military Personnel Policy section, Office of the Secretary of Defense, Pentagon; Director of Human Services in charge of Substance Abuse Services, Army Community Services, and Race Relations/Equal Opportunity Programs, Kaiserslautern, Germany; and Deputy Director for Military Psychiatric Research, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research until his retirement in 1981.  In Vietnam, Dr. Romo directed psychiatric services as a Captain with the 25th Infantry Division and the 935th Psychiatric Detachment, 93rd Evacuation Hospital.  His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and Bronze Star Medal.

Dr. Romo currently serves as Team Leader of the Lowell, MA Veterans Readjustment Counseling Center and is the Commander of the Jewish War Veterans, Department of Massachusetts.

The Gloucester Office of Veterans’ Services invites and encourages our returning veterans to join us in parade and ceremony.

Friday, November 11

9:00 a.m. – Veterans Day Ceremonies, City of Gloucester, Gloucester High School Field House

10:40 a.m. – Parade departs Gloucester High School to American Legion Square

11:00 a.m. – World War I ceremony, Joan D’ Arc Monument, American Legion Square

Luncheon at the Captain Lester S. Wass American Legion Post 3 immediately following ceremony

Cape Ann Transportation Authority will have a trolley available to travel to from Gloucester High School to the Joan D’ Arc Monument and back to Gloucester High School immediately following ceremony

Luncheon at the Lester S. Wass, Post 3, American  Legion immediately following ceremonies.

In the event of rain, combined ceremonies will take place at the Gloucester High School Field House.
